Our curriculum

We endeavour to ensure that the early years’ curriculum encompasses everything experienced by children during their time with us, in order to challenge and extend their knowledge and understanding of the world. This is delivered through play and talk using both the inside and outside learning environments.

Learning through play

Play is children’s work; it is how they make sense of their world and how they develop their personalities and skills. At Green Shoots Day Nursery we follow the Early Years National Curriculum, which is based on the principles that every child is a competent learner from birth; that children learn to be strong and independent from a basis of loving and secure relationships; that the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning; and that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and that all areas of Learning and Development are equally important and inter-connected.

We work in partnership with parents and carers to achieve a common goal of assisting all children to develop:

  • Towards their full potential in a happy child–orientated and secure learning environment
  • Lively enquiring minds, with a love of learning
  • The ability to question and think for themselves
  • The ability to express their thoughts and feelings
  • Qualities of feeling, imagination and a sense of beauty
  • Self-respect, confidence, and an awareness of and sensitivity to the needs, beliefs, attitudes and values of others
  • The ability to celebrate and value their own and others’ endeavours and achievements
  • The ability to work independently and with others
  • The knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to grow physically, spiritually and morally, contributing positively to a rapidly-changing world

Observation and Assessment

We start from where the child is, and build on their knowledge, interests and skills to take them on to the next step in their learning. We make careful observations of each child, then plan learning experiences to support and extend their development and learning needs. Staff take an active part as play partners in learning experiences, talking things through with children, intervening when necessary, but also knowing when to stand back and allow developing independence. Records will be kept of each child’s learning, and shared with parents and carers. We will also have daily home-nursery books where you can tell us of anything significant that has happened at home.
